WHAT IS ASSAY OFFICE SRI LANKA
Independent official body established by National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act No. 50 of 1993, for Assaying & Hallmarking of jewellery and articles of precious metals, to ensure third party control OR an independent control body which has been appointed by a state to the “Convention on the control and marking of articles of precious metals”.
The first Assay Office in Sri Lanka was established in Colombo during 1981 under the purview of the then State Gem Corporation with the objective of making jewellery “Hallmarking” mandatory in Sri Lanka.
National Gem & Jewellery Authority is the only Government body empowered to Hallmark Gold, Silver, Platinum jewellery in Sri Lanka.
An official control mark or combination of marks applied on to precious metal jewellery / articles by a state appointed independent Assay Office.
Hallmark is a series of marks/ symbols stamped on precious metal article viz, gold, silver & or platinum, after it passes a chemical analysis carried out by an independently operated Assay Office.
