Sri Lanka, celebrated globally as the “Gem Island,” is poised to inaugurate a pivotal milestone in its gemstone industry with the grand opening of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) Building in Demuwatha, Ratnapura. Scheduled for April 4, 2024, at 10:00 A.M., this auspicious event marks a significant leap forward in consolidating Sri Lanka’s position as a premier destination for gemstone trading and craftsmanship.

The NGJA Building stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich legacy in gemstone mining and trading, spanning over 2,500 years. From the renowned Ceylon sapphires to the captivating Padparadscha sapphires and vibrant rubies, our island nation boasts an unparalleled abundance of precious gems, each carrying a unique narrative of our heritage and tradition.

The construction of the International Gem and Jewellery Trade Center, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to fostering growth and innovation in the gem and jewellery sector. Designed to offer a comprehensive range of services and facilities under one roof, the NGJA Building will serve as a focal point for local and international gem traders alike.

As outlined in the Cabinet’s approval, the first phase of the project entails the construction of a five-story building with a floor area of 17,550 square feet, representing an investment of Rs. 365 million. Subsequent phases will see further expansion, including the development of a modern 14-story building adjacent to the initial structure.

The NGJA Building will house essential facilities and services, including:

  • Gem Testing and Certification Laboratory Facilities
  • Banking and Money Transfer Facilities
  • Courier and Postal Services
  • Information Facilities
  • Ample Parking Facilities
  • Restaurant Amenities
  • Insurance Services

This government-vested trading complex aims to streamline the gem trading process, providing a conducive environment for business transactions and fostering growth opportunities for industry professionals.

The grand opening ceremony will be graced by the esteemed presence of the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who will serve as the guest of honor. His attendance underscores the significance of this milestone in advancing Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector.
